Camp Quality is Australia's most reputable children's cancer charity for kids aged 0-13, running a range of services and programs to help children cope with the daily ups and downs of dealing with cancer. Like many organizations around the globe, Camp Quality had to quickly transform into a remote workforce almost overnight following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We spoke to Natalie Gallagher, Head of People and Culture at Camp Quality, about how the organization is using Local Measure Employee Pulse to check-in on the wellbeing of their 70+ employees during these unsettling times.

Since using Employee Pulse, we’ve found that we’re getting feedback from employees that may have previously not spoken up. It allows us to stay close to how our people are feeling, and pass their feedback on to managers to make sure we can better support them.

How is Camp Quality using Employee Pulse?

We’re running weekly employee pulse checks every Tuesday to check how our employees are feeling. We’re seeing over 70% response rates and about 10% of people leaving comments, which is great. The majority of our staff are happy to be identified, only a few have chosen to be anonymous.


What do you value the most about the tool?

  • Simplicity: I like the simplicity of it - it’s a simple pulse check, not a full employee engagement survey. Our staff also understand that it’s simple, so they don’t have the same expectations as with employee engagement surveys. They know it's not about the company, it's about them and how they are feeling. We’ve had feedback on everything from how they feel about work, to how they feel based on what’s happening in their personal life. It helps us quickly identify themes and trends and understand how our people are going.
  • Insights: Not everyone is comfortable giving feedback face to face, as we have several quiet achievers in the organization. Since using Employee Pulse, we’ve found that we’re getting feedback from employees that may have previously not spoken up. It allows us to stay close to how our people are feeling, and pass their feedback on to managers to make sure we can better support them. We’ve also been able to identify themes and see whether people’s ratings have changed week to week.    
  • Actionable: I’m able to reply to an employee directly within the tool to acknowledge their feedback or ask further questions. Employees really appreciate it when I follow up with them.  


What are you learning from the feedback?

We have discovered many of our employees are feeling stressed and anxious because of COVID-19 and remote working, which we expected. But we have also received a lot of positive feedback about our company leadership and communication during this period, which is pleasantly surprising. We’ve been reporting the results and findings with staff through our weekly staff email to keep them up to date.

How are you using the feedback?

We have a weekly huddle as a leadership team where I share the latest employee sentiment score and any key themes. Our CEO can also access the Employee Pulse dashboard to check the feedback at any time, and I'll let our next level managers know if there is any feedback they need to action with their team.
